HAGOROMO - 羽衣 - is a Japanese Noh play often attributed to the legendary Noh master Zeami Motokiyo (世阿弥 元清) (c. 1363 – c. 1443). The play tells a tale of an angel who comes to earth and loses her magical invisible cloak. A fisherman finds the cloak and intends to keep it. Upon hearing of the fisherman with an invisible cloak, the angel finds him and asks for her cloak to be returned. But the fisherman says no. The two strike a deal where the cloak is to be returned if the angel will perform the sacred moon dance. The angel agrees and reclaims her cloak. She ascends to the moon.

Noh performer Ryoko Aoki and The Amplified Elephants have created a 21st Century reimagining of this story blending electronic music and sound art with traditional Noh performance techniques.

As a live experience Jonathan Duckworth (RMIT University) and Shingenori Mochizuki (Ritsumeikan University) have created an avatar of Ryoko and virtual environments in which that performers and audiences are immersed.

The technological advancements of this project are furthered by the use of the Disruptive Critters interface created by DHD (RMIT) and featuring the vocals of James Hullick and Justine Anderson.

Ross Eldridge (RMIT) has been the computer programmer for this project, supported by Casey Rice.

New music for this project has been composed by The Amplified Elephants and James Hullick in consultation with Ryoko Aoki. Ryoko's vocals are from the original Zeami score.
